Please join us on Sunday, February 23, 2025, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Honorable Louis Stokes, and launch our year-long celebration of his life and work. Admission to this event is free, and all are welcome!



In 1968, Louis Stokes (1925-2015) became the first Black congressman to be elected from the state of Ohio, and he served in that capacity for 30 years. The list of related activities for the centenary year also includes:

• Fine and performing arts programs


• "By the Book" discussions of The Gentleman from Ohio, Congressman Stokes' biography


• A special October 2025 National Arts and Humanities Month series that will focus on the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the history of Black political empowerment in America
